Dr Uroš Grilc assumed duties of the Minister of Culture
Dr Uroš Grilc was born in 1968. He studied at the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, where he obtained his degree in 1993. He started to work as secretary of the Society for Theoretical Psychoanalysis. In 1995, he became a young researcher at the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, and in 1996 he was in Paris with a scholarship for advanced studies where he met the French philosopher Jacques Derrida. He regularly published in the Magazine Problemi, and was member of the editorial board of the Krt book series. In 1998, he obtained his doctorate from the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana with a dissertation mentored by Slavoj Žižek and co-mentored by Tine Hribar and Mladen Dolar. Since graduating he has published extensively and is the author of translations into Slovenian of four books by the philosopher Jacques Derrida, extremely complex and of relevance for contemporary philosophical thought. He has also translated a series of classical philosophical texts, from Heidegger to Husserl and Levinas. In 1999 and 2000, he was head of the publications unit of the Institutum Studiorum Humanitatis – a faculty for post-graduate humanistic studies. In this period, he initiated and participated in the creation of the magazine Topos and the Documenta book series, and was a lecturer in the Lingvistika programme. In 2000, he joined the Ministry of Culture, and worked first in the Division for the Cultural Policy and System, and also became adviser to the government for the publishing sector. Since 2004, he has been the head of the Division for Books and Librarianship. In this period, he headed the following projects: drafting of the National Programme for Culture, implementation of the library allowance scheme, drafting of the Legal Deposit of Publications Act, and drafting of the Book Agency Act. In 2007, he became head of the Department for Culture of the Ljubljana Municipality, where he headed the team drafting the Culture Development Strategy for the Municipality of Ljubljana. The Strategy was adopted by the Municipal Council in 2008. In 2013, he became Minister of Culture of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia.
