The Sector for Slovene Language cooperates with the holders of political, administrative and expert competence from the viewpoint of the use, enforcement and development of the Slovene language. It provides for appropriate legislative solutions and their realisation, and it assists those that are interested in obtaining an answer relating to linguistic questions. 
 
In the sector the following joint tasks are performed:

• cooperating with other internal administrative units at the Ministry,
• monitoring developmental viewpoints from its own working area,
• preparation of groundwork materials debated by the government of the Republic of Slovenia and the parliament of the Republic of Slovenia and by the working and advisory bodies of the EU, as well as the preparation of opinions for such groundwork materials,
• cooperating in the development of joint databases and communicating with the public according to prescribed internal rules,
• preparing and harmonising development projects, measures for co-financing programmes, projects within the sector’s own area and managing financing procedures.

In the sector the following special tasks are performed:

• cooperating with scientific, educational and other organisations and societies that deal with linguistic questions,
• cooperating in the preparation of statutory solution proposals that refer to the protection and the development of the Slovene language,
• monitoring the execution of statutory provisions that refer to the Slovene language and preparing the reports thereof,
• preparing warnings for competent bodies concerning the non-execution of statutory provisions that refer to the Slovene language and preparing measures to improve the situation,
• preparing proposals for inclusion of linguistic policy in the national programmes,
• monitoring the execution of national programmes on parts that refer to the Slovene language,
• preparing and mediating explanations on Slovene literary norms as written in accepted manuals, on possibilities for linguistic adult learning, and on linguistic rights of the citizens of the Republic of Slovenia and of foreigners in the territory of Slovenia,
• deliberating on comments and complaints by legal persons and citizens regarding the use of the Slovene language as an official language,
• directing the preparation of promotional materials on the Slovene language and its public use,
• informing the public on directions and on open questions regarding linguistic policy,
• cooperating with similar organisations in other states,
• organising public debates, consultations and a symposium in the area of linguistic policy,
• cooperating in the preparation and organisation of the Ministry’s web pages,
• preparing administrative procedure decisions issued at the second level on the legal remedies against the administrative decisions issued by the Inspectorate of the Republic of Slovenia for culture and media due to a breach of the Public Use of Slovene Language Act.
