The Minister holds a doctorate in historical science and is a regular professor of History of the Middle Ages at the Faculty of Arts at the University of Ljubljana and is an author of numerous scientific and expert works in the area of early new-era history.   In treaties and essays he was also concerned with a position of a historian in relation to history and with problems in Slovene historiography, and in recent years he has also prominently delved into the area of 20th century Slovene history. His last book, published in Ljubljana (in 2003) is entitled Fanfare nasilja, his last book, published in Zagreb (in 2004), was co-written with Peter Štih and is entitled Slovenska povjest do prosvetiteljstva. 


The Minister was, in previous years, also active in public political life and was a head of the presidential candidate election campaign for 2002. In 2003, he was one of the initiators of the civil initiative ‘Something Must Be Done’ and was a member of the main committee for Nato. Since 2004, he has been a member of the Presidency Assembly for the Republic and a member of the Expert Council of the Slovene Democratic Party responsible for culture.
