Anton Peršak graduated from the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television and then worked as a freelance theatre director, writer and critic. Since 1980 he has been a teacher at his former Alma mater, and during the following decade published several well received books (novels, short stories and criticism).

His political activity started within Slovene Writers' Association in the late 1980s: he has served in the parliament from 1990 to 1996, and later as mayor of the municipality of Trzin near Ljubljana. He has also served in the parliament's other chamber, the National Council, as a representative of the arts. Since the 2014 elections he was secretary of state (deputy minister) at the Ministry of Culture in the Miro Cerar government.

Anton Peršak was president of the Slovene Writers’ Association and later of the Pen International Slovene Chapter. During his most active political years up to 2005 he slowed down his artistic output, but returned in full force in 2013 with an impressive book Usedline (»The Sediments«), a runner-up for the novel of the year award.
